Zagreb – what to see?

What attractions does Zagreb offer?
Gornji Grad, or the Upper Town, together with Kaptol, was the centre of Zagreb until the 19th century. Here you will find St Mark’s Square with the famous mediaeval St Mark’s Church – everyone will admire its portal with the sculptures of the twelve apostles – the most important example of Gothic sculpture in continental Croatia. There is also the Baroque Church of St Catherine located on the Jesuit Square. Out of the city walls only one gate survived – the Stone Gate, the city’s most important religious site, inextricably linked to the image of Our Lady of the Stone Gate. If you want to admire the panorama of Zagreb, be sure to climb the Lotrščak Tower, from which a cannon shot can be heard every day at noon. Towering over the entire city is the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, located on Kaptol, which is the tallest religious building in the entire country. This is a must-see for lovers of painting, as the Cathedral’s sacristy houses the painting ‘Golgotha’ by Albrecht Dürer.
The Lower City, or Donji Grad, on the other hand, is the modern centre of Zagreb, built in the 19th and 20th centuries. Its main square is Ban Josip Jelačić Square, where you will find, among other things, attractions such as the Jelačić monument, the Manduševac fountain, Kolmar Palace or the Rado House.
If you are looking for unusual attractions, be sure to visit the Museum of Broken Relationships, which contains objects donated by couples whose relationships have not stood the test of time, such as engagement rings, travel souvenirs or love letters. To get a feel for the city, it is also worth going to Dolac Market, the largest food market in Zagreb (near the Cathedral), where you can buy fresh fruit and fish and many regional products.
